Meet Commander Boonji, the Antiguan spaceman
Head to the end of the pier at the Hodges Bay Resort for one of the most surreal sights in the Caribbean.
Backed by the iridescent Caribbean Sea, the Boonji spaceman at the Hodges Bay Resort & Spa in Antigua is certainly a sight to behold.
Towering at 22-feet-high, it is the tallest sculpture of its kind in the Caribbean.
The sculpture was created by American artist Brendan Murphy – a favourite with celebrities like Serena Williams and Robert De Niro – and weighs an incredible 1.4 tonnes.
The Boonji spaceman only ‘landed’ in Antigua in March.
He has already proved a hit with holiday makers and wedding parties, keen for him to ‘crash’ their photos.
He took three days, 12 men, one crane and custom scaffolding to erect and is reinforced with a steel skeleton core designed to withstand hurricane-force.
The day I visited Boonji I was treated to the truly surreal sight. The resort’s fitness instructor, Tango, firied up his sound system and danced energetically on the pier, right in front of the spaceman.
Boonji didn’t come in peace, it seems.
He came to party.
